#15 – The Sellout (Paul Beatty, 2015)
The Sellout is a novel written by American author Paul Beatty and published by American publishing company Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 2015. In the United Kingdom, published by Oneworld Publications in 2016. The book arises in Los Angeles, California and about a main character that grows watermelons and artisanal marijuana. Beatty has expressed his inspiration for composing the novel was that “[he] was penniless”. It won the Man Booker Prize in 2016 and the first American writer to hold that award. The novel about a storyteller alluded to just by his last name, “Me”, that endeavors to reorganized segregation and slavery in his Los Angeles neighborhood. This endeavor prompts a Supreme Court case.
